Volunteer Services

As the first medical institution in Santa Clara County, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center has forged a long tradition of service and dedication to the health of the community. In 1855 the first six patients were cared for in a converted house near the Guadalupe River in downtown San Jose. In 1876, the first hospital building was completed at the present site.

Today our new facility stands on those same grounds and offers a wide variety of medical services. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center cares for thousands of hospitalized patients and provides treatment for a half-million outpatient and emergency visits annually.

Make a Difference - Volunteer!
Volunteers at SCVMC are a positive, well-trained presence in the hospital and clinics. They make patients their top priority and serve as one team working together for the good of the patients, visitors and staff.

The Volunteer Services Program is open to adults who meet the following requirements:
  • A sincere desire to be a positive, helpful presence in the hospital and clinics
  • The ability to complete the required number of service hours
  •  The ability to serve people of diverse backgrounds, ethnic groups, and physical abilities
  • 18 years of age and older
  • The ability to complete the two-hour orientation, the application paperwork, the confidentiality training, and the health clearance. This process can take up to one month to complete.
  • Responsibility for wearing the designated volunteer uniform

The Adult Program
The Adult Program is open to individuals 18 years of age and older who are out of high school and have time in their schedules to serve 4 - 5 hours per week. Most volunteer opportunities are available during the week between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. New adult volunteers are placed in "entry level" volunteer opportunities. Please see the descriptions below and let us know if you are interested in becoming a volunteer!

Gift Shop - The hospital Gift Shop is a nice place of enjoyment for hospital staff, visitors and patients. It is also the primary way we raise funds for the Volunteer Auxiliary at SCVMC. If you enjoy people and shopping this is the place for you! Gift Shop volunteers assist customers with purchases, price merchandise, maintain the shop, and set up displays.

Medical Library - The Medical Library lends books, educational materials, tape recorders, and audio and musical tapes to patients. By volunteering in the Medical Library you will help to make library materials accessible to patients and to the hospital staff.

Nursing Unit Volunteer - Assist staff on nursing units by assembling packets and charts, copying and filing paperwork, transporting items to the lab, assisting discharged patients, and providing patients with water or juice.

Outpatient Clinic Volunteer - Assist staff in one or more of our many busy clinics by picking up and delivering charts and supplies, transporting specimens to the lab, providing directions, and filing paperwork.

Reach Out and Read Program - Promote childhood literacy by reading to children in the waiting rooms of our Pediatric Clinics. If you love children and reading, this is a wonderful opportunity to share that love with our littlest patients and their families.

Surgical Waiting Room Volunteer - As a Surgical Waiting Room volunteer you will spend time with the families of patients in surgery. You help make the wait more comfortable for families by speaking with them, bringing them reading materials and offering them coffee and tea.

Welcoming Center & Information Desks - As a part of our team you have the opportunity to help the patients and visitors feel welcomed to the hospital and clinics. You greet our patients and visitors, provide them with directions and information, and do all you can to create a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere for all.
