Accessibility Day at Santa Clara Valley Medical CenterTweet Share Santa Clara County, CA – On Saturday, August 12th, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center will host an incredible event for people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. Adaptive equipment, such as the exoskeleton, other robotic mobilizations devices, and motor vehicles will be exhibited. Other highlights include a wheelchair dance class, accessible bocce ball, and hand cycle demonstrations throughout the event. “It is exciting to offer Accessibility Day for our current and former patients, and anyone in our community living with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, or other disabling condition” commented Dr. James Crew, Chair, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, SCVMC. “Showcasing equipment and recreational activities is important to help optimize independence and expand an understanding of opportunities for those living with impairments. Our goal is always for patients to achieve the highest level of function possible and to minimize barriers for community participation.” Disability affects about 56.7 million people in the United States. People with disabilities, including those who have long-term physical, mental, or intellectual impairments, face various barriers that may hinder their full and effective participation in society. The Rehabilitation Center’s mission includes optimizing the health and independence of our patients. Accessibility Day activities are one way the Rehabilitation Team supports our patients and community in reaching their goals. “Our wonderful partners like the City of San Jose and the VMC Foundation helped to make this promotion of health and wellness happen,” said Robert Medel, Rehabilitation Research Center, SCVMC. “Accessibility Day helps us showcase how people living with disability can reduce or eliminate the limitations and restrictions they may face in recreational or sports activities.” Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 11 am to 2 pm Accessibility Day will be held in parking lot and lawn area in front of the Rehabilitation Center at SCVMC, 751 S. Backed by these resources, care teams bring together a diverse range of skills and experience for the single purpose of helping to rebuild lives following serious and often catastrophic injury and illness. Care teams - physiatrists, other physician specialists, nurses, therapists, psychologists, social workers, case managers and other specially trained health professionals - believe that the uniqueness of each patient is best served by an equally unique approach to care. This belief is built into the highly personalized care plans that direct the rehabilitation of each patient.
