Radiology Residency

Resident Life

SCVMC is centered in the heart of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. Most of our residents reside in nearby cities in the Santa Clara County, with some living in San Francisco and Palo Alto. The Bay Area is often described as one of the best places to live in the country, and San Francisco has been declared “the happiest and healthiest city” in the US by Huffington Post. With the beaches of Santa Cruz, the mountains of Big Sur, the culture and activities of the Bay Area, and the culinary experiences of Napa Valley just an hour away, it is an ideal place to train. In a nutshell, the Bay Area is multicultural, intellectual and a haven for outdoor and culinary adventures!

What Residents Are Saying

We pride ourselves in providing a work place that is not only strong academically for our residents, but also family-oriented thereby evoking a strong sense of community in our residents and attendings alike.   Here are some comments about our program from current and prior residents.

Mingming Ma

"SCVMC offers everything an applicant could want in a residency program. We're trained to become efficient, confident, autonomous radiologists skilled at both diagnostic imaging and interventional procedures. We have excellent teaching through our own institution and gain additional exposure when rotating through Stanford and UCSF. And of course, the sunny California location is unbeatable.”

Alex Penn

"Valley is a wonderful place to learn radiology.  The educational experience includes exposure to a diverse case load and a comprehensive didactic curriculum, which is cycled every two years.  Our residents consistently excel on boards, fellowship placement, and beyond. I'm confident in the caliber of my training here."

Jennifer Trinh

"We have the best of both worlds at SCVMC.  We benefit from the personal attention of a small program with a 1:1 attending to resident ratio as well as strong affiliations with tertiary medical centers such as Stanford and UCSF, where many of our residents obtain fellowships. The attendings all demonstrate a vested interest in our well-being and growth. I feel lucky to have found a residency that offers such a personalized learning experience."

Patrick Flanagan

"SCVMC is a great place for residency.  There is a great breadth and depth of pathology, supportive ancillary staff, and dedicated physicians. I especially like the high volume of interesting cases and procedures, where in a department without fellows, the resident always has the opportunity to be hands on."

Yauk Lee

"VMC radiology is truly an amazing place to learn. The atmosphere is very friendly and supportive, yet at the same time, holds us to high standards and motivates us to do our best. The attendings and residents have a wonderful complement of personalities and a team work ethic that makes me proud to be a resident at VMC."

Scott Honowitz

"I've really enjoyed my time here at Valley.  The county hospital setting is rewarding place to work and provides a diverse array of patients and pathologies.  The program is small with close knit bonds between residents and attendings alike.  The down to earth nature of my colleagues and fun, collegial environment makes coming to work everyday something to look forward to."

Janet Nguyen

"It is rare to find a program that offers such a balance between service and education, between clinical experience and academic pursuits.  Our attendings are knowledgeable and approachable mentors, and my co-residents are bright and fun to work with. I know I definitely made the right decision choosing Valley.”

Jeffrey Dorr

"SCVMC is a busy level I trauma center nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, with an international patient base.  With our strong training, residents leave the program ready for fellowship and their future careers, well prepared to practice in any setting.  As an added bonus, living in the Bay area allows for wonderful dining, hiking, sightseeing, and travelling."
