Kazuko Shem, M.D.
Chief, PM&R Clinic
Dr. Shem joined the PM&R department in 1998. Her interests are in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, Electrodiagnostics, General Rehabilitation, and clinical research. She is predominantly involved clinically in seeing patients in the PM&R clinic and performing Electrodiagnostic studies. Her research focuses include community reintegration and quality of life after SCI and electrodiagnostic medicine as it applies to neurological conditions. Dr. Shem has received multiple grants including the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation’s Quality of Life grants, the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation grant to develop telemedicine, and the Department of Defense grant to study tele-psychology.

He is predominantly involved clinically as an attending on the Acute Rehabilitation Unit, outpatient PM&R clinic and spasticity management.

Dr. Varma joined the PM&R department as faculty in 2017. Prior to moving to California, she was an attending physician at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of PM&R for three years. Her interests are in Brain Injury Medicine, Electrodiagnostics, Amputee care, and General Rehabilitation. She is predominantly involved clinically in providing acute hospital consultations, attending on the Acute Rehabilitation Unit, outpatient PM&R clinic and performing electrodiagnostic studies. Since 2019, she has served as the Stanford PM&R residency site director.
