Overview

Message from the Program Director Vanessa Starr:

Welcome to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) Radiology residency.

SCVMC provides a wealth of training opportunities with diverse pathology offered by a Level 1 Trauma Center. Our department, consisting of 18 residents and 22 faculty members, is dedicated to promoting a rich environment of learning, teaching and practicing clinical radiology.

SCVMC is a 731 bed tertiary referral hospital with several Centers of Excellence and research and innovative opportunities ranging from stem cell research to exoskeleton rehabilitation innovation. As a county hospital that provides care to more than 25% of county residents, we serve a diverse patient population. From a residency standpoint, we are strongly committed to recruiting a diverse group of residents, which ultimately enriches the residency and department and best ensures high quality patient care.

Located in Silicon Valley, Santa Clara is one of the wealthiest counties in California, recently opening the $468 million Sobrato Pavilion building which boasts 168 capacious private patient rooms. The radiology department is modern and spacious, with state-of-the-art digital PACS and imaging equipment.

During the course of the four-years, residents are thoroughly exposed to the breadth and depth of Radiology during their training. We pride ourselves in the fact that by the end of residency, our residents will have gained expertise in becoming confident, highly competent, independent radiologists.

Our curriculum includes rotations with nearby affiliates UCSF and Stanford, where our residents rotate for Obstetric Imaging, Body Imaging and Pediatric Imaging. Stanford residents also rotate in our department for Mammography and Interventional Radiology. This academic relationship affords our residents additional training experience in highly specialized imaging as well as networking opportunities. Many of our residents ultimately obtain fellowships at these nearby institutions.

In addition to robust clinical training, residents are encouraged to strive for a healthy work-life balance in our gorgeous California climate. Common outings include day or weekend trips to San Francisco, Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and Monterey. Many residents enjoy the outdoors in the multitude of nearby National Parks.

We hope you see you soon in sunny California. Don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Sincerely,

Vanessa Starr, MD

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN JEFFREY SUNG:

Our residents benefit from hands-on, one-on-one, interactions daily with our subspecialty trained faculty and clinician colleagues. We are proud to provide an atmosphere of camaraderie that is conducive to residency education. Residents are supported throughout their career from their clinical training, to research, to fellowship and ultimately their employment. Our residents also have the unique opportunity to shape and develop their training curriculum, create their own quality improvement initiatives, and foster their leadership skills. The residency provides exposure to a wide breadth of interesting cases while offering an opportunity to care for under-served patients in the bay area. We are committed to embracing a diversity of backgrounds in our residency and department, and believe that this diversity serves as a catalyst for excellence in education and patient care for our cosmopolitan patient population.

Our program trains well rounded residents who will have rewarding careers in any work setting, from academic to private practice. We invite you to learn more about our program through this website or by contacting our current or former residents, Program Director, or any of our faculty members.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Sung, MD MBA
