PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency
The PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program accepted their first resident in 2017 and received full ASHP accreditation in 2019.
The residency program director is Helen Tran, PharmD, BCACP, Diabetes Care Manager. The residency program coordinator is Michelle Ito, PharmD, BCACP.
For 2024-2025, the program is recruiting one PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy resident.
PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program
Our PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency is a one-year postgraduate specialty training program that offers residents an immersive experience in all aspects related to ambulatory care pharmacy after they have completed a PGY1 residency.
The goals of the program are to help the resident specialize in patient care related to ambulatory patients, and to gain experience in collaborative interdisciplinary ambulatory practice. By the end of the program, the resident will be able to manage medication therapy for complex patients with multiple disease states. Additionally, the resident will gain experience in ambulatory pharmacy leadership, including management and precepting activities.
As a pharmacy department that offers comprehensive health services for the community, our program offers ambulatory care experiences in a number of diverse settings – see below for learning experiences offered. During the 12-month program, the PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy resident will complete training in pharmacy operations and rotate through learning experiences that will expose them to a variety of disease states. The resident will also complete a year-long residency project to be presented at a conference.
At the completion of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency, the resident will be fully prepared to serve as an ambulatory care pharmacist, with the potential to become a supervisor or manager.

Research Projects
Each PGY2 resident will be required to design and write a research proposal – if Institutional Board Review (IRB) approval is required, the resident will present to the IRB committee. The primary focus of the research project will be ambulatory care-related, such as starting a new service, performing a quality improvement initiative, or analyzing potential for cost savings. The residency coordinator, residency director, and residency project preceptor will guide the resident throughout the year with the intent of presenting the research results at a conference, such as the Western States Regional Residency Conference in San Diego, California. Moreover, in addition to acquiring time management and presentation skills, the resident will improve his/her writing skills upon completion of the research project.
Teaching
Our institution is affiliated with a variety of pharmacy schools, including University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy and Touro University California College of Pharmacy. Dozens of pharmacy students per academic year complete their clinical clerkship rotations (APPEs) within our institution, thus providing the resident many opportunities to precept pharmacy students.
Our residency program has an expanding PGY1 program. PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy residents will assist pharmacists in precepting students and PGY1 residents during their ambulatory care rotations. Additionally, our institution is a certified provider of continuing education for pharmacists; the PGY2 resident will be asked to present a continuing education program during the year.
Pharmacy residents will complete a teaching certificate program that is run jointly by our Health System and the University of the Pacific. This is optional for PGY2 residents who already have a teaching certificate from their PGY1 program.
Pharmacy Operations/Staffing
The PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy resident will be required to review outpatient non-formulary drug requests. The pharmacy resident may also be involved in staffing in one of our ambulatory care clinics. Total staffing hours will not exceed 8 hrs/week.
Regional and National Conferences
In November, residents may attend the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) Seminar, an annual four-day meeting where residents showcase their institution’s residency program to prospective applicants and have an opportunity to attend continuing education programs and develop networking connections.
In December, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Annual Midyear Clinical Meeting provides similar benefits to that of the CSHP meeting, except on a broader scale, as this is a national conference.
In May, residents may present the outcomes of their longitudinal research project at the Western States Residency Conference. This is a gathering of residents and fellows from the western states.
Conference attendance is optional but encouraged. The residency program reimburses residents for at least 50% of registration costs, but the program is unable to reimburse residents for airfare (mileage reimbursement for driving is available). Hotel reimbursement is oftentimes granted, but this is not guaranteed like registration costs. Conference attendance requirements may be tailored to fit the resident’s projects and interests.
Qualifications for Acceptance
ALL APPLICANTS MUST FULFILL THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO OUR PGY2 AMBULATORY CARE PHARMACY RESIDENCY PROGRAM:
- Completion of a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy
- Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program or one in the ASHP accreditation process (e.g. – Candidate Status)
- Eligible for licensure in the state of California
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States
- Minimum of 240 hours of experience as an outpatient staff pharmacist preferred
- Favorable recommendation letters from clinical faculty, preceptors, and/or former employers
- Demonstrate collegiality, clinical knowledge, interest in research, and motivation necessary for successful completion of residency training
- Demonstrate desire to pursue a career in ambulatory care pharmacy
- Completion of an interview with residency leadership, pharmacy supervisors, and preceptors

The following documents will be required of all prospective applicants to complete the application process (all submitted via PhORCAS):
- General PhORCAS application (including letter of intent)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Three references from clinical faculty and/or former employers (via PhORCAS). At least two of the three letters of reference must be from your PGY1 program. No supplemental letters are necessary; reference writers only need to fill out the PhORCAS reference form.
- Supplemental attachments to be submitted via PhORCAS:
- A sample clinical presentation (patient case or disease state) to be presented during the on-site interview. Presentations should be 20 minutes in length.
- A sample of your written work (e.g. publication, monograph, drug utilization review, etc).
