Rapid Medical Evaluation & Sexual Assault Response Team

The Rapid Medical Evaluation (RME) Unit is a four-bed treatment area within the Emergency Department. Our emergency physicians and other medical professionals quickly evaluate patients with urgent medical problems. The RME Unit is open from 8am to 4am every day.

The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) provides medical and forensic response to victims of sexual assault, 12 years and older, who come into our Emergency Department, 24 hours a day. There are approximately 20 specially trained registered nurses who serve as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners respond to patients who come to the SCVMC Emergency Department. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner provides medical evaluation and treatment, collects evidence for forensic purposes, and will testify in court as necessary. Dr. Sharon Cu is the Medical Director of the SART Program.

For general information about this critical program, please contact the SART Coordinator during regular business hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm. The phone number is (408) 885-6466
